Semion Ben is a retired chief of a police station in Haifa, who arrives in Odessa to execute the will of his late friend and to hand down his legacy, an old pet dachshund, to someone. However, the old policeman is convinced that his friend did not die a natural death. Liza Galinskzya, Semion's landlady, helps him in his investigation - she has plans for Semion, as well as ambitions of becoming an investigator herself. Nikolay, a local policeman and Liza’s nephew, also “helps” Ben. Overcoming all kinds of jests and obstacles, Semion proceeds with his investigation and finally exposes the criminal. Impressed by Semion’s skills, Nikolay and Liza talk him into staying in Odessa for a while and becoming involved in other investigations.
