August 1944. The Soviet Department of Military Counterespionage is trying to identify an enemy secret agent. The search is being conducted in Vinnytsya, an area in Ukraine close to Hitler’s former headquarters, recently re-captured by Soviet troops.

Fascist paratroopers arrive in a nearby forest, and at the same time strange ciphered messages signed by a mysterious ‘psalm-reader’ are discovered.

There is an atmosphere of unease and menace in the area, and at the bottom of the lake lie the corpses of hundreds of soldiers, killed in action. Suddenly people start to disappear, ghosts are sighted, and dead bodies are discovered. The whole area will become the centre of dramatic events, as it becomes clear that the spy is one of the Soviet army’s own men.

Captain Sirota is ordered to find the saboteur and eliminate him. But the agent has no idea of the kind of weapon he will have to deal with and what tragic events his investigation will lead him into.
